Title: Visual Basic.NET Programming for Mainframe Programmers

Description:

This course is designed for experienced mainframe programmers desiring to leverage their existing programming experience as they move into PC-based programming. This is an accelerated course which emphasizes corporate-style development issues, including design standards, visual standards, user-interface standards, class module design, 3-tier client/server issues, program to database interfacing, and more.

This course consists of lecture and extensive hands-on training, as students are guided to develop reusable code samples for use with many VB.NET controls. Students are encouraged to select a real-world PC software requirement for possible use as a class team project, subject to instructor approval. Basic design of one or more screens for the team project, plus development of the actual code to use the screen(s) are accomplished in this course, providing a "jump start" into the student’s actual work assignment.

This course does not cover:

• development of VB.NET controls
• server-based DLLs
• MAPI, TAPI, Windows CE interfaces
• VBA, VB Scripting

The instructor has 25 years of mainframe and PC programming experience, 9 years of VB programming and database design experience, is a Microsoft Certified Professional, and is the developer of a successful commercial VB software product.

Length of Course: 10 full days (customized versions of this course may differ in length)

Mandatory Prerequisites:

• Six months experience using a PC with Windows 98, Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
• Minimum 2 years experience as a mainframe programmer in any industry standard programming language (e.g., COBOL, RPG, ALGOL, PL/I)
• Good typing ability

Minimum/Maximum number of students per class: 5/15

Locations: On-site at customer facilities

Customer Facility Requirements:

• One PC for the instructor, plus one PC per student, each with the following software already installed:

• Windows 98, Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
• Visual Basic.NET

• LCD palette projection equipment which is interfaced to project instructor’s PC screen for viewing by students during lecture

Title: Using Microsoft Access to Analyze DB Data

Description:

This course is designed for programmers and advanced users who wish to be able to extract and analyze data from existing corporate databases, using Microsoft Access as a front-end data manipulation tool with ODBC connection to the database. This course consists of lecture, example, and extensive hands-on training.

Students learn to:

• selectively extract data meeting specific and compound criteria by developing simple and complex queries in MS Access, using real-world examples
• develop and use sub-queries to produce desired results
• utilize aliases to provide more meaningful field names
• utilize built-in functions to provide statistical analysis
• develop summary and crosstab queries
• develop customized reports based on the queries created
• use ODBC-attached tables
• create tables of selected data
• export selected data to word processing and/or spreadsheet applications
• write and validate basic to moderately complex SQL Select statements which can be used in VB programs

This course does not cover:

• update or append queries
• SQL statement types other than SELECT
• code module creation in MS Access

The database used for this course will be supplied by the instructor as an MS Access database. Customization of this course to use customer’s existing database is available; please see the additional information on course customization below.

This course is taught by a team of two instructors; one instructor lectures and demonstrates examples using overhead projection, while the other instructor "floats" among the students to ensure that every single student is able to perform every hands-on example or exercise presented in a timely fashion. This ensures that every student gains valuable and effective hands-on experience actually using the software, and that all students proceed through the course at the same pace.

The lead instructor has 25 years of mainframe and PC programming and database design experience, 9 years of VB programming and Access experience, is a Microsoft Certified Professional, and is the developer of a successful commercial VB software product. The secondary instructor has a minimum of 2 years of computer instructor experience.

Length of Course: 3 full days (customized versions of this course may differ in length)

Optional Course Customization:

This course can be customized to use the customer’s existing database as follows:

• Examples in the printed student material will use customer database fields.
• Exercises in the course will be performed using the customer database tables.
• Lab exercises will reflect actual student work requirements, where possible.

Customization of the course must be jointly agreed upon by Mega-Data Services, Inc., and the customer, is subject to an additional cost, and is subject to the following requirements:

• Customization must be requested with sufficient lead time to allow Mega-Data Services, Inc., to become familiar with the structure and use of the database for the purpose of determining its suitability for use in the course, and to make the necessary course modifications.
• Network connections to the database must be in place and functioning in the training facility during the course.
• Remote access to and/or extraction of sufficient data from the database must be made available to Mega-Data during the customization period for development purposes, or customer must allow Mega-Data to come on-site for customization purposes, at customer’s expense.
• Customer personnel who have in-depth design and usage knowledge of the database must be made available to Mega-Data for consultation, in person if Mega-Data comes on site for customization and by telephone.

Customization Price: Subject to negotiation, based on the structure of the database, the amount of lead time available, and the total number of students and/or course instances to be ordered.
